Nigeria police uncover plot to bomb Abuja again

The Nigeria Police Force say it has “credible intelligence reports” indicating a plot to carry out attacks on the Abuja transport sector by insurgents believed to be the terrorist Boko Haram group.

“The attacks which are intended to cause panic amongst Abuja residents and visitors alike are planned to be perpetrated through suicide bombings, or through the use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) concealed in luggage, bags, cans, and other receptacles, ” Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, said in a statement on Saturday.

Mr. Mba, an assistant commissioner of police, said the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, has ordered the Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory and his colleagues in adjoining states to beef up security at major parks around Abuja and its environs.

The police urged the general public, “particularly those within and outside the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja to be roundly vigilant and report any suspicious persons, objects, movements or activities to the Security Forces without delay”.

Motor parks operators were also strongly advised to discourage overnight parking of vehicles at motor parks, particularly by unknown persons while also urging park workers to reduce congestion at the parks “by disallowing the indiscriminate parking of private cars, tricycles and motorcycles at the precincts of motor parks”.

The Police High Command advised the “general public in other places outside the motor parks should also monitor their environments as the terrorists may likely shift attention having known that their plots have been uncovered” while also assuring citizens not to panic as “security forces are working round the clock to neutralize and effectively deal with the threat”.

The nation’s capital has been hit by insurgents in recent times with the most recent being the explosion at a Banex plaza shopping complex in the Wuse district of the city, which left at least 21 people dead and 52 others injured.

POLICE UNCOVER PLANS TO ATTACK ABUJA TRANSPORT SERVICE, IGP ORDERS INTENSIVE SURVEILLANCE

Credible intelligence reports at the disposal of the Nigeria Police indicate that terrorists have perfected plot to carry out attacks on the Abuja transport sector. The attacks which are intended to cause panic amongst Abuja residents and visitors alike are planned to be perpetrated through suicide bombings, or through the use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) concealed in luggage, bags, cans, and other receptacles. The Police High Command therefore, while ordering FCT Commissioner of Police in particular and other CPs in adjoining States to beef-up security at major parks around Abuja and its environs, enjoins the general public, particularly those within and outside the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja to be roundly vigilant and report any suspicious persons, objects, movements or activities to the Security Forces without delay.

Meanwhile, the Police Authorities enjoin citizens not to panic as the Security Forces are working round the clock to neutralize and effectively deal with the threat.

As part of additional efforts at forestalling the attacks and strengthening security around the transport sector, the Police High Command has called on the management of Motor-parks to ensure that travelers and workers’ safety comes first. It charges them to constantly conduct regular and routine scanning of their environments while insisting on carrying out a thorough search on passengers and their bags as well as vehicles entering and leaving their parks.

It also advises that such searches must have the active participation of the passengers involved and warns that any item or luggage unaccompanied by any passenger must be rejected outright and should not be allowed into the vehicle.

Passengers are also enjoined to be on the lookout for any passenger, who might come in with luggage but will attempt to disembark without such luggage.

While operators of motor parks are strongly advised to discourage overnight parking of vehicles at motor parks, particularly by unknown persons, the Police authorities further advise motor park workers to reduce congestion at the parks by disallowing the indiscriminate parking of private cars, tricycles and motorcycles at the precincts of motor parks.

In addition the Police High Command advises that the general public in other places outside the motor parks should also monitor their environments as the terrorists may likely shift attention having known that their plots have been uncovered.

More African Migrants Perish Crossing Mediterranean - UN

The United Nations refugee agency says the death toll of migrants trying to reach Europe by crossing the Mediterranean continues to rise. The UNHCR says 12 bodies have been recovered in the latest tragedy, which occurred when a boat overturned soon after departing from Libya.

The victims of this tragedy include a Syrian mother and her two small children, three Eritrean nationals and six other Africans of undetermined nationalities. The U.N. refugee agency said it was informed about the accident on Monday, although the boat capsized off the coast of Tripoli on Sunday.

It said the boat, which was meant for 200 passengers, was probably carrying many more people than it could hold.

UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards said search and rescue operations to find possible survivors or to recover the bodies of other victims were continuing. He said it was likely other people aboard the ship may have perished.

"UNHCR applauds the search and rescue operations being run by government authorities but asks that such operations are further strengthened, particularly in areas with high concentrations of boat crossing. We are also urging states worldwide to look at providing legal alternatives to dangerous sea journeys. These might include family reunification, speeded resettlement and humanitarian government admissions. Governments are additionally being encouraged to resist punitive or deterrent measures including detention for people seeking safety," he said.

The UNHCR reports more than 500 people have lost their lives this year while crossing the Mediterranean. This includes 217 people believed to have drowned off the Libyan coast and at least 288 others confirmed dead or missing from boat accidents in the waters off Italy, Turkey and Greece.

Italian authorities said 64,000 migrants have arrived on their shores since the start of the year. The Italian government has asked other European nations for help in coping with the influx.

Meanwhile, the U.N. refugee agency said it has registered nearly 37,000 asylum-seekers and refugees in the Libyan cities of Tripoli and Benghazi. It said Syrians made up the largest group, followed by Eritreans, Somalis and Iraqis.

The UNHCR said many asylum seekers lived in precarious conditions -- but that many would risk their lives on the perilous Mediterranean crossing in a desperate bid to find refuge from wars and persecution and, in some cases, poverty and unemployment.

CHILD MARRIAGE: 8-Year-Old Bride Dies After Sex With 40-Year-Old Husband

An eight year old bride identified as Rawan, died in Hardh in the governorate of Hajjah in northwestern Yemen, from internal injuries on her wedding night, bleeding to death after deep vaginal tearing caused by intercourse with her 40 year old husband, according to a report issued by UPI on Sunday, Sept. 8.

Activists in the region are fighting for forced child marriage to be banned, and they have called for police to arrest the girl's husband and family.

The issue of forced marriage of child brides is a socially accepted custom and is widespread in many rural areas in Yemen.

A February 2009 law set the minimum age for marriage at 17, but it was repealed after some conservative lawmakers called it un-Islamic.

In particular, a prominent Islamic cleric, Abdulmajeed al-Zindani, issued a fatwa in support of the practice, declaring supporters of a ban on child brides to be apostates, and ultimately leading a successful campaign against legislation that would prevent adult men from marrying children.

Legislators have been looking at ways to curb the practice and they have so far been unsuccessful.

Currently the law states that parents should decide when a daughter marries. Unfortunately, reports indicate more than a quarter of Yemen’s females marry before age 15.

HOUSEHELP AND BOYFRIEND ROB MASTER OF $100,000. FAKE SOLDIER ARRESTED

The SuspectsOperatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja, Lagos have arrested a  female house help who allegedly connived with her boyfriend and two fake soldiers to rob her master of over 100,000 Dollars.

The 23 year-old house help, Adaeze Ijeoma, allegedly sneaked into her master’s bedroom  located in Maryland,  Lagos, last month, after he  traveled out of the country.  Unsure of where to keep the foreign currency, she reportedly took it to her boyfriend, one Onyebuchi Uche, only for him to flee with the money, leaving Adaeze in doubt.

On his part, Onyebuchi , who has been jobless for years,  rushed to Alade market, Ikeja where he changed some of the dollars to naira and thereafter, deposited the sum of N8 million in two banks. He thereafter, told operatives at SARS that he also bought  a car; ‘End of Discussion’ and a plot of land in an undisclosed area where he had started molding blocks for building.

Determined to get her own share of the loot from him, betrayed Adaeze was said to have confided with one of her relatives identified simply as Nnamdi to help retrieve the money from her estranged lover.

Nnamdi and two other persons clad in Military camouflage reportedly stormed Maryland last week where on spotting Onyebuchi, bundled him inside his new vehicle and took him to a hotel in Mende area of Lagos, where they reportedly tortured him and forced him to disclose where he kept the money. They reportedly managed to get the sum of N6.5 million from two separate banks where Onyebuchi kept the money, including the new car he bought.

However,  just when Adaeze was contemplating on what to do with her own share of the recovered loot, an eight man robbery gang reportedly stormed her master’s home, where an unspecified amount  including his phones and other valuables were carted away.

The robbery case was reported at SARS after which Adaeze and two other persons were arrested.  Although she denied having a hand in the recent robbery, she however, disclosed her role in the theft of 100,000 Dollars.

In this interview with Crime Guard, she said: “ I am from Akri village in  Ogbaru Local Government area of  Anambra State. I left the village in 2010, after my secondary school education  in search of greener pastures in Lagos, where I started working as a house-help for  Chief Uche and was paid the sum of  N10,000 monthly.  I lived in the same apartment with chief and to be honest to him, he has treated me as a member of the family.

“I met my boyfriend Onyebuchi after being lonely for a while in 2011. I was tempted to steal my boss’s money and gave it to my boyfriend to keep so that we can start our own life. I gave him because he promised he would marry me. I stole the money so that we can, at least, get a lease of life when married.  I believed he would use it wisely because he has always had plans for the future.

“But I began suspecting foul play after he stopped picking my calls . When I went to where he lives in Mende, I was told he usually came home late. Later, those who know us told me he started driving a car.  That was when I contacted my uncle, Nnamdi to help retrieve the money from him. On the day, he was to go with his two soldier friends, I waited at Mende for Onyebuchi and when I sighted him, I pointed him to them and left for home immediately. After he was tortured, he called me on the phone that he was sick and when I went to see him, he said some robbers stole the money from him and even battered him to stupor.

“I swear, I do not know anything about the other robbery operation in the house. The robbers came armed and forced me to take them round the house. They only got some money in the guest room and took my master’s Black berry phone, his gold wrist watch and other things. They also took my phone but left it at the backyard.  I did what I did out of love for my boyfriend, not knowing he would betray me. Now he has fled, leaving me to bear the consequences alone, without having a taste of the money, “ she stated in tears.

On his part, Nnamdi claimed he was once a military personnel but resigned on his return from a foreign mission where he got the sum of N2 million. Surprisingly, Nnamdi was discovered to be an in-law to Chief Uche.   “I am from Akaokwa village, in Ideato North Local Government area, Imo State and the complainant  is married  to  my father’s sister. I used to sleep in their house  any time I came to Lagos to sell  palm oil and at times, I spent  one month.

“When Adaeze told me about the money, I threatened I was going to tell her boss. But on second thought, I thought if I got the money, I could use it to enrich myself.  I then contacted  Chima, my friend who is now at large. It was Chima who contacted  a soldier who initially gave his name as Corporal Humphrey. It was later we discovered he was a dismissed soldier.  We lodged at Tropicana Hotel in Mende Maryland ,where we took  Onyebuchi  to. I was in full Army uniform while Ajaghe my other friend,  was wearing a camouflage  cap, pretending to be soldiers.

“We tied him to a ceiling fan and beat him in order to force him to tell us where he kept the money. We seized his car. And ordered him to transfer the N2.4 million  he said was in First Bank and N5.5 million in Fidelity bank to my account for easy withdrawal. We used ATM card to withdraw the money for one week  from one of the banks  while we withdrew the rest from separate branches of the other bank. At the end, I gave Onyebuchi’s car to Chima to keep  and N500,000 to Ajaghe , while I kept the rest, with the hope of giving some to Adaeze and keeping the rest”, he said, adding that he knew nothing about the robbery operation at Chief Uche’s apartment.

The Commander, SARS, Mr Abba Kyari, said the suspects would be charged to court while efforts were still on to arrested other fleeing members of the gang.

Troops Uncover Boko Haram Female Wing Members

Boko Haram WomenThe military hierarchy, on Friday, told newsmen that it has arrested three suspected female terrorists who it says have been secretly recruiting ladies into the female wing of the Boko Haram sect.
The suspects, Hafsat Usman Bako, Zainab Idris and Aisha Abubakar, were said to have been intercepted while travelling to Madagali, Adamawa State from where they were to transit to the forest to reunite with their cohorts.
Investigations carried out by the military revealed that the suspects, led by Hafsat Bako, were on their way to recruit members into the female wing, as well as conduct espionage for the group.
According to the military, Hafsat’s link with the terrorists group had earlier been a subject of investigation in 2012, when security agents on a man-hunt for one Usman Bako, her husband, who was identified as a terrorist, stormed their residence in Jimeta.
This is said to have resulted in the discovery of an AK 47 rifle and 2 loaded magazines.
Before the arrest of the trio suspects, the women were hiring ladies especially widows and young girls by enticing them with male suitors who are mainly members of their terror group.
The military says it has continued to make good progress in the war against terror.
